Therapeutic approach

As a relational psychotherapist, I see relationships and social contexts as significant influences on everyone's difficulties, patterns, and emotional themes, and endeavour to ensure that my clients feel deeply understood within the therapeutic relationship, without the use of pathologizing frameworks.

In my experience, every individual's vulnerabilities make sense when understood in context.  The relational process of making sense together as we lay the groundwork for change facilitates personal growth, insight, and resiliency.  I am honoured to do this work, and to receive many referrals from current and former clients.

Training and Experience

I have been working collaboratively with clients in my psychotherapy practice for 20+ years.  I graduated from the 4 year training program in psychotherapy at the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy in 2001.  My training included rigorous theoretical study and clinical practice as well as extensive group and personal therapeutic work. During my psychotherapy training, I was an intern in the student counselling service at Sutherland-Chan School of Massage Therapy.  I have an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto (Psychoanalytic Thought).  As a relational psychotherapist, I am influenced by a range of contemporary psychoanalytic, developmental, and feminist approaches.  I also have a longstanding interest in clinical applications of mindfulness, compassion, and other aspects of Buddhist psychology. I seek continually to grow as a therapist through reading, research, supervision, and participating in professional workshops.

In addition to my private practice, I was a group facilitator at Sheena’s Place, a service for people with eating disorders, for 12 years (2002-2013), most recently facilitating  “Next Steps to Recovery,” an advanced eating disorder recovery group.  I also facilitated many groups on emotional eating.
